Replacement window companies can basically fall into two categories. First, you have the purely local contractors or specialized installer companies. These contractors or installers may favor one particular window brand, but they usually have a variety of manufacturers for you to choose from. Second, you have the huge franchised or corporate operations like  Andersen, Anlin, The Home Depot, Marvin or Pella. These larger window outfits should offer you a variety of brands to choose from, but some companies will only install their own brand; i.e., Pella will install only Pella windows.

At Airtight Windows and Siding, we do things a little different.

Tip: Shop local from local installers.

  • Shopping for Window Products – Consumer Reports reviews and provides ratings for replacement window products. The National Fenestration Ratings Council is another source of information about energy ratings for skylights, windows and doors.

  • Choosing a Window Installer Company – Installers are usually local so it may be a challenge to find ratings for local contractors. The Internet has many review sites to with local company reviews. We recommend using websites like Yelp, Google + local and Angie’s List to find reviews from local consumers. It is better if the reviewer has provided his/her name. Another great way to find a window installer company is to look around your neighborhood and ask the neighbors who appear to have newer windows. Friends will usually speak honestly and tell you whether a window company performed to their satisfaction.

  • When searching the internet from your laptop or smartphone for a window installation company, be sure to add in a local parameter when surfing the web. As an example, in Google, you can perform a search for “replacement windows Santa Cruz, Aptos,” a virtual map of your town and surrounding areas should show up on the right side of the screen along with a list of local window companies that rank locally for installations. Checking installers’ client testimonials and portfolio of their work may help in making a more educated decision.

  4. Ask About Different Manufacturer Warranties.  Ask about warranties. Some manufacturers like Anlin Windows will offer a 20-year transferable limited warranty. Transferable means the warranty adds value to your home so if you decide to sell it, the warranty can be used by the new owner.  While other brands’ window warranties are different and can only be good to the original buyer of the windows.
